Choosing and Using Instructional Materials
EdVantage
Consulting helps districts select instructional materials and programs
that support curricular reform and student achievement.
Choosing and using instructional
materials are under-appreciated aspects of curriculum development.
Academic research suggests that 63% of instructional time in all
disciplines at all grade levels is based on textbooks. In elementary
math and high school history classes, as much as 90% of the work
students do is assigned directly from a textbook. Any effort to improve
student achievement cannot ignore the central role of textbooks in the
curriculum.
We offer two ways to improve the selection of textbooks or instructional programs.
Professional Development in Choosing and Using Instructional Materials We
train teams of teachers in the selection and implementation of new
curriculum programs. We help faculty see past the flash and the
glitz, so that they can focus on the quality of both a program's
content and instructional design. Our criteria and processes are based
research and best practices
identified by the National Research Council and the American Academy
for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). These rigorous workshops not
only lead teachers toward the resources best suited to the needs of
their students, but also demonstrate how quality instructional
materials can support the district curriculum and student mastery of
the content standards.
Balanced, Unbiased Reports that Compare the Quality of Textbooks
Our independent, balanced, and unbiased reports compare the strengths
and weaknesses of textbooks and other instructional materials, offering
districts a way to streamline their textbook adoption. We compare books
on the quality of both their content and instructional design.
